The following memo details special notes for Common Sense users who wish to
transfer GEOS files to and from our LIBrary 13. Please note that we have now
compressed all our GEOS files to ARC or SDA files. You may thus download all
GEOS files as you would any other PRG file, and then extract the components
using ARC230.BIN from our LIBrary 1. If you wish to upload, it will be much
easier if you ARC or SDA the files first, since Common Sense makes it
extraordinarily difficult to transfer SEQuential files without ASCII/PETSCII
translation. This is why the decision was made to ARChive these files. If,
however you wish to leave this step to the Sysops, we will be happy to do it,
although that may delay our making the file public by a day or two. If you
do decide to transfer GEOS SEQuential files without ARCing them, please pay
special attention to the remainder of this file. Please also see XMOGEO.DOC
for general notes on transfering GEOS files using the Xmodem protocol.
Dear Everyone,
I'm sorry to hear of your trouble with the GEOS CONVERT program and the
Joy Stick 2 Input Driver using Common Sense. You should use XMODEM when
you use Common Sense because there are problems with its B-Protocol.
To double check for you, I dug out my Common Sense program and did some
testing for you and others. First of all, use the XMODEM Protocol. I went
to DL 13 and downloaded CONVRT.BIN - choosing Receive and Program from the
Common Sense XMODEM prompts and gave it a name of CONVRT.BIN. The following
and necessary switches MUST be turned off. On the bottom status line of
Common Sense I turned off these switches B TR just before I entered the
DOW command. See your Common Sense Manual on Pages 39, 42 and 43 for instructions
on C=I, C=English Pound Sign amd Shift English Pound Sign - these are like "toggle"
switches so entering each of them changes them from being displayed or
not displayed. All three should NOT be seen on the Common Sense Status line
so they are all off.
Now I downloaded from DL 13 here the file JOYST2.IMG (The Joy Stick 2
Input Druver). I used XMODEM and it was downloaded (received) as a SEQuential
file and all three of the above switches were set OFF or NOT displayed on
the Status Line. I should mention here that these files were download to a
GEOS Work Disk. And also turn these switches OFF after entering the DL
DOW command - otherwise you won't be able to read what CompuServe displays.
Then I logged off and worked with GEOS. After booting GEOS and opening
my Work Disk I just downloaded to, find the C64 SEQ Icon you just downloaded
as a program named CONVRT.BIN and rename it to be CONVERT in all Upper/Case letters. Then
do a double click on this Icon. Your screen will return to the Basic blue
screen with the word RUN displayed and then you will get the Normal blue startup Basic
screen. Now, boot GEOS again and open your GEOS Work Disk. You should now
see a GEOS Convert Icon where before you had the C64 SEQ Icon. This Icon has
a double pointed arrow on it. With that done correctly, next double click on
this new CONVERT Icon and you now get a convert sub-menu displayed at the top of your screen.
Click on CONVERT and then the box for converting C64 GEOS SEQ files to GEOS
format. Now you will get the box showing all the C64 SEQ files and your
Joy Stick 2 filename should be listed. Click on the Joy Stick filename and
the screen should display in the center "Converting..." and when finished
you will have the GEOS convert sub-menu and now you click on file and then
exit back to GEOS. You should now have a GEOS Icon for the Joy Stick 2
Input Driver.
This is also explained in the XMOGEO.DOC file in DL 13. If anything
is still not clear, please read XMOGEO.DOC and leave me another message.
Good luck and take care.
Sincerely,
Sysop/Betty Knight
NOTE: If your XMODEM Terminal Program does NOT automatically "strip off"
the end padding that XMODEM adds for the last block to be 128
characters, then you will need the Utility program in LIBrary 1 named:
xstrip.bin
xstrip.doc (for instructions)
This also includes the "CONVERT" programs.
Again, the special actions detailed in this file are NOT needed anymore for
downloading, since all GEOS files in our LIBrary are now PRoGram files, which
can be downloaded by Common Sense without special action. This memo is of
interest only to those who will be uploading GEOS SEQ converted files without
ARCing them.
Ed Flinn/Sysop
